1)What is the temperature increase of 4.0 kg of water when heated by an 800-W immersion heater for 10 min? (cw = 4 186 J/kg⋅°C)
2)A spherical air bubble originating from a scuba diver at a depth of 18.0 m has a diameter of 1.0 cm. What will the bubble’s diameter be when it reaches the surface? (Assume constant temperature.)
3)An 80.0-g piece of copper, initially at 295°C, is dropped into 250 g of water contained in a 300-g aluminum calorimeter; the water and calorimeter are initially at 10.0°C. What is the final temperature of the system? (Specific heats of copper and aluminum are 0.092 0 and 0.215 cal/g⋅°C, respectively. cw = 1.00 cal/g⋅°C)

Power P = 800 W
Time = 10 min = 600 sec
Heat Q = P x time = 800 x 600 = 4.8 x 10^5 J
Let temperature increase = deltaT
Q = m x cw x deltaT
4.8 x 10^5 = 4.0 x 4186 x deltaT
deltaT = (4.8 x 10^5)/(4.0 x 4186)
= 28.7 °C
Ans: 28.7 °C
2) h = 18.0 m
Density of water p = 1000 kg/m^3
Atmospheric pressure Patm = 1 x 10^5 Pa
When the bubble is at depth h:-
Pressure P1 = Patm + pgh
= 1 x 10^5 + 1000 x 9.8 x 18
= 2.764 x 10^5 Pa
At surface, pressure P2 = 1 x 10^5 Pa
P1 V1 = P2 V2
V2/V1 = P1/P2 = (2.764 x 10^5)/(1 x 10^5) = 2.764
Let initial diameter = d1, final dimeter = d2
Diameter is proportional to volume^(1/3)
Therefore d2/d1 = (2.764)^1/3 = 1.4
d2 = 1.4 d1 = 1.4 x 1.0 cm = 1.4 cm
Ans: 1.4 cm
3) Let final temperature of the system = tf
Heat lost by the piece of copper
= 80.0 x 0.092 x (295 - tf)

Heat gained by water and calorimeter
= (250 x 1.00 + 300 x 0.215)(tf - 10.0)
= 314.5(tf - 10.0)
= 314.5 tf - 3145
Heat lost = heat gained
2171.2 - 7.36 tf = 314.5 tf - 3145
314.5 tf + 7.36 tf = 2171.2 + 3145
321.86 tf = 5316.2
tf = 5316.2/321.86 = 16.5 °C
