.REG file Recovery after File System damage

Microsoft Windows is the world's most popular operating system. One of the main as well as unique features it has is the Windows Registry, the core of Windows. It plays the most vital part in maintaining the overall operating system configuration. Every single time we install software or make a change to a setting in Windows, registry updates take place. In case, we need to increase the system performance or bring back the lost Administrator account (after we create one or more new users) on the Welcome screen, the registry has a solution. No other operating system offers the flexibility of Windows Registry. Though too much information and fragmentation may cause Windows to crash due to registry errors and lead to File Recovery.

The .reg files are used to backup the Windows registry or a part of it. We can use the .reg files for various purposes as inserting missing information into the Windows registry, restoring the complete registry in case of software errors and solving the problems related to o similar issues like application errors as .reg files in Windows through the registry. Also, the Windows Registry keeps such registry files even after we uninstall software like an Office suite etc, which is one of the most common reasons behind registry size increase. So, ideally we should remove such .reg files preferably using software and defrag the Windows Registry to keep it free from any troubleshooting requirements.

A user can simply export the complete Registry information as a single .reg file to his system to create an exhaustive backup of Windows registry. Such .reg files can only be used with the same installation of Windows in case of any issues. The method to do this is as follows:

1.) Click on Start button and go to Run, type regedit and click on OK. Go to the File menu and click on Export.

2.) You will see the ‘Export Registry File’ window so that we can choose the preferred location and type a file name for the registry backup.

3.) Similarly, we can import this fil y going to the File menu and choosing the Import option, when we face some issues related to operating system like application errors related to registry corruption.

When a user needs to restore the registry from the .reg backup he should ensure that no application programs are open and minimal items are running as of startup environment. We normally commit a mistake of storing such critical .reg files locally. We should always store them on an external hard drive or optical media. Such mistakes may lead to file recovery at a later stage due to problems like file system corruption by corrupt index information, disk defragmentation errors, malicious software like virus etc.
