Regulator Scuba
Tankless Scuba Diving Water Regulator?

Is there a such thing as a water regulator that allows you to breathe under water without the requirement of a tank or pack? If so, what is it called and where can it be found.

If not, what are the ones called that require tanks (not scuba tanks but the ones that have a backpack type attachment)?

Nothing that's "tankless" with a regulator as far as I'm aware ( a regulator still requires a gas source) but there are smaller devices out there, the most popular being Spare Air. It consists of a much smaller than normal canister with a built in reg. They come in a few sizes and actually fit in a holster that you attach to your BC.
Other than that, you can opt for a small pony bottle which is typically much smaller than an Aluminum 80 and can be strapped on to the back of a BC harness or even an existing tank on the back of your BC or a D ring at your side.
Here's the URL for Spare Air. http://www.spareair.com/
